Practices have the ability to discount during checkout using two options: Item Discount or Cart Discount.
What is an Item Discount?
An Item Discount is the dollar or percent discount that can be applied to a single item in the cart.
If the item you are looking to discount is taxable based on how you have set up taxes on items in the catalog, a tax will be applied to the new total.
For example, if the tax rate is 8.6% on retail items and the item you want to discount is originally $10.00, the total with tax would be $10.86. If you apply an item discount of $1.00, the new total of the item would be $9.00. Thus, your total with tax would be $9.77.
What is a Cart Discount?
A Cart Discount is the dollar or percent discount that can be applied to everything in the cart. The discount gets applied proportionately to each item in the cart. Then, tax is applied to each item with the new, discounted price.
To see an example of how this is calculated, see below:
Assuming each item has an 8.6% tax rate. A client is purchasing two items that total to $105.00, and you want to apply a $10.00 cart discount. The cart discount will apply proportionately to both items.
- Sunscreen $70
- Cart proportion = $70 / $105 = 67%
- Discount proportion = 67% * $10 = $6.70
- Total cost before tax = $70 - $6.70 = $63.30
- Total cost after tax = $63.30 * 8.60% = $68.74
- Moisturizer $35
- Cart proportion = $35 / $105 = 33%
- Discount proportion = 33% * $10 = $3.30
- Total cost before tax = $35 – $3.30 = $31.70
- Total cost after tax = $31.70 * 8.60% = $34.43
- Total Cart
- $68.74 + $34.43 = $103.17
If a refund is issued for one or more items, the total refund amount is equal to the total minus the proportionately discounted item. For example, if the client wants to refund the $70 Sunscreen, using the above calculation, $68.74 will be issued back.
What will the receipt look like after adding a Cart Discount?
The receipt does not break down the discount by line item. However, the receipt will show the sub-total before tax, sum of discounts applied, total tax, and the total amount paid.
